Barack Obama mythical hero of the picture: an assessment

A brief overview of major newspapers, news sites, TV and programs that although he was one month since the U.S. elections, "Obamania" is still booming. Obama has become an icon popular culture in the pair of Madonna, Batman and rock. He then thought that the image of Obama and history can not compete with the myth of Joseph Campbell and dogs, which Campbell called monomyth stars (1). Consciously or subconsciously, people - and sometimes Obama himself - tend to project this image on it. Since 2006, he was called and the legend (2), and recently I even read a blog where the writer called "savior"! (3) eyes, I'm not making a claim of a profound originality in this - I discovered that George Lucas has already noted Obama after the journey of the hero (4) and two bloggers who have talked about it, even superficially (5, 6). However, I would like to see this in more detail than the others I read - and this article will be longer than most others!

First things first. For those who do not know, Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) was one of mythologies in particular its age (7). He is best known for his groundbreaking book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. This is in what articulates the myth of the hero journey, which directly influences George Lucas "Star War", The Lion King Disney and countless movies and books since (8). The book "deconstructs" the hero journey in three parts. My intention here is to compare the results with the history of the rise of Obama power and the presidency.

Preliminary

As for the analysis of Campbell, the hero is someone in particular, course, emphasized in some way by their peers. Born of an African father and white mother, Obama's mixed heritage has been identified as a "special duty personnel from the beginning. In addition, a feature of the campbelli hero he is often neglected by his family and the story of Moses. This archetype Obama is doing very well: it was abandoned, only two years in Kenya for his father, father, Barack Obama, who has met only once in his life. This has had a major impact on him, according to his bestselling autobiography, "Dreams from My Father (9).

Part I: Departure

1. The call of adventure: the hero gets a call from lighthouse often another person (called the "Herald")
Obama describes a moment of self-awakening in his book Dreams from my father when he realized after one year of employment with a firm undertaking that his calling was to work for the poor (10).

2. The refusal of the call - Sometimes the hero refuses the first call to action.
There is an element Optional Campbell's book does not apply to Obama, who appears as a positive and ambitious person.

3. Supernatural help - The hero is helped by a figure of protection that provides support
In his youth, the mainstay of Obama seems to have been his mother, Stanley Durnham Ann, and his grandfather Stanley Durnham, who acted as a surrogate father (11). The policy was an important figure in the Illinois Senator State Emil Jones, Democratic leader. His wife, Obama, who called her "rock" has also been a major influence on his political career.

4. The crossing the first threshold - the hero must pass an initial test to enter the new world of action heroic
There were times essential keys to Obama's life that shaped his future political career. One of them was its decision after two years of participation at Occidental College in California for the transfer to Columbia University, where he graduated in science policies. Another, looking for a low paid job as a community organizer in Chicago. Thirdly, his decision after two years work Chicago, Harvard Law School.

5. The belly of the whale - the hero must go through an initiation test implies a descent into a dark and dangerous world
In Dreams from My Father, Barack Obama presented his darkest moments, such as drugs and excessive alcohol at Punahou High School and Occidental College. Obama confessed to becoming a marijuana "to" push questions of who I was out of my Mind (12). Finally, however, he got his life together by moving the Western College, Columbia University.

Part II: Introduction

1. Road Test - succession of obstacles
Barack Obama has been confronted a series that has overcome the obstacles to political ascendancy. The first was a candidate for Senate from Illinois in 1996, when he to eliminate the best candidates right. It has been a success, but with what some critics say that unfair tactics - which successfully challenged the campaign to vote the two candidates have been legally suspended from all competition (13).
The second obstacle is the failure of demand U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, when he lost to Bobby Rush holder by two to one. It was a pain defeat, the only time he considered abandoning the full policy (14). He did not, and Obama has learned many useful aspects of this campaign effort.
In 2004, he successfully executed his candidacy the U.S. Senate. Finally, in 2007, won the support of Democratic presidential against the best in law Hillary Clinton.

2. The meeting with the Goddess s - marriage between the hero and the queen or mother figure
In 1988, Obama met Michelle Robinson, a man graduated from Harvard Law, then he did a summer internship at the law firm Sidley Austin. He married in 1992. Obama is deeply appreciative of his wife, he called his "rock". He explains: "There is something of honesty of these projects and strength. This is what a professional amazing, and his partner, and mother and wife "(15).

3. Woman as temptress - the rejection of a powerful female figure
A reading of Obama's life shows that seem to respect, even admire female figures. First was his mother Stanley Ann, and then there was Michelle Obama. Finally, there are other political mentors as Alice Palmer (16). If there was a women than Obama had to "reject" Hillary Clinton was, his fight against the Democratic candidate for the presidency. However, Obama does not seem to feed feelings wrong to Hillary, and did an act of corruption "kind of way to Obama.

4. Atonement with the Father - Reconciliation with the tyrant and merciful aspects of a parent-like authority figure
As dreams of my father shows, Obama was affected by the absence of his father, Barack Obama Sr. (17). An important part of the lives of young Obama was headed by his effort to reconcile the absence of his father with his racial heritage in mind.

5. Apotheosis - Expansion Hero itself, or radically changed the perception of reality
Obama was the apotheosis of his first famous 2004 speech to the convention National Democrats, which in the center of attention and change the course of his career. Obama's grand final was his candidacy and the success of the offer for the Democratic nomination in 2007.

6. Last Boon - the hero becomes a key point or victory
His first major victory was his overwhelming victory in the U.S. Senate in 2004 and subsequently, his appointment in 2007 and Democrat, finally, his election to the presidency in 2008.

Part III: The Return

1. Refusal to return - having attained enlightenment or happiness, the hero do not want, you can return to the ordinary world
This is not the case for Obama, since his victory has been achieved in the ordinary "in the world, not another world or mythical land. On the other hand, has always been an ambitious person, who did not settle in one place, but aim higher (18) (19).

2. Magic Flight - the hero can fight with the blessing "
Obama has had to withdraw all Case for the Democratic nomination for president in 2007, he had to take the best titled Hillary Clinton.

3. Not Rescue - the hero needs help to bring supernatural blessings in the ordinary world
There were several times when "Good luck streak in Obama" played in. It is no coincidence that the Washington Post in an article in August 2007, called his promotion to U.S. Senate as "a series of fortunate events" (20). They showed in 2004 how his U.S. Senate victory was helped Decision by Peter Fitzgerald, the incumbent senator, does not show up for his own seat again, on charges of domestic violence against the candidate cons Democrat Blair Hull, who was the favorite for the position just one month before the election and domestic sex scandal against the Republican candidate Jack Ryan. Obama finally came to win the Senate seat by a landslide: 70% (21).

4. Crossing the threshold of profitability - Return hero to the ordinary world
The return of "threshold" may win the presidency American, who was both a challenge and is - After his victory over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

5. Master of both worlds - The hero refers both divine and human worlds
After his political career and experience, Obama is now seen as able to lead the United States and share his vision for the American people.

6. Freedom to live - the hero gives his blessing to similar.
Once you have won the presidency, Obama is now able to contribute to the improvement of American life and improve image of the United States damaged abroad.

Conclusions: Barack Obama story and the image fit very well with the "Hero's Journey Campbell reason", even if does not flow linearly, like Campbell has designed. It is, After all, natural: Campbell was Disecting fairy tales on one floor and books, but Obama Fig real life and his life is beyond imagination.

On the other hand, a point to note is that the model of Campbell does not go beyond point 6 where the hero is able to give the gift to others. Obama should go beyond the heroic journey in the workplace gift campbelli real part. Currently, Obama is a hero by his past, and the symbol of change, Youth and the racial unity he represents. However, their work long term that defines a true hero.

It’s hard to guess what fictive icons of popular culture will endure and which will evaporate from the collective memory. In the 1940s, probably few would have imagined kiddie heroes Batman or Superman retaining marquee value into the next century.
