Any one know how to play The Legend Of Zelda Phantom Hourglass ds game?

Ive made the game file etc and selected game mode adventure, i dont really understand the instructions, when im on the game adventure the grampa says go to this place but the bridge has broke and the only other way is with the monsters but you get killed if you go in there....??? please could someone explan to me how to play this game? Any help would be appreciated! thank you!

They have a book you can get that has all the secrets of the game. It tells you how to get all the items etc.
